In Southwest Florida, disasters such as Hurricanes Charley and Wilma, wildfires and mass-casualty incidents are tragically familiar. Other threats like terrorism and pandemic flu may lie just beyond the horizon. When such events occur they threaten to overwhelm local healthcare resources.

Often impossible to avert or prevent, large-scale emergencies have sharpened our understanding of the health dangers we face. They’ve made us aware of the importance of emergency preparedness, and of the need for a volunteer organization of practicing and retired medical professionals teamed with non-health field lay citizens ready to fill the gaps in care that arise when disaster strikes home. The Southwest Florida Medical Reserve Corps is that organization.

Volunteers with SW Florida MRC understand that the first response in times of need is local response. As a MRC volunteer you are disaster trained and credentialed. Sponsored by the Lee County Health Department, the MRC is integrated into this area’s emergency management system. When deployed by LCHD, volunteers are protected from liability under Florida Sovereign Immunity Statutes and workers’ compensation insurance is provided.
